Diaper eczema is a common skin irritation in the diaper area of babies. It is caused by moisture, friction, and prolonged skin contact with urine or stool. This condition manifests itself with redness, swelling, and tenderness of the skin. Sometimes, a fungal infection (usually Candida) can also accompany diaper eczema.
Treatment begins with keeping the skin dry and clean. It is important to change diapers frequently and to allow the skin to breathe. In addition, barrier creams (e.g. zinc oxide) applied to the diaper area help protect the skin. If there is a fungal infection, antifungal creams can be used. Careful skin care is essential in preventing and treating diaper eczema.
