Impetigo is a superficial skin infection, usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. It commonly occurs in children on the face, hands, and other exposed skin areas. It is characterized by a red rash with honey-colored crust and is highly contagious.
Treatment is usually with topical or oral antibiotics. Topical antibiotics are appropriate for mild cases, but widespread or severe infections may require oral antibiotics. Hygiene is important in treating impetigo; infected areas should be kept clean and infectious materials should be removed. Children should be encouraged not to touch infected areas and not to share personal items.
